UPD staffs and colleagues at LSE Geography & Environment presented at RC 21 Conference 2019 held in Delhi, India on 18-21 Sep 2019, themed “In and Beyond the City: Emerging Ontologies, Persistent Challenges and Hopeful Future”.
On 20 Sep, Professor Hyun Bang Shin, in Geography and Urban Studies, Department of Geography and Environment LSE, convened a session “The Urban Spectre of ‘Global China’ and Critical Reflections on its Spatiality”, drawing on an ongoing project of Saw Swee Hock Southeast Asia Centre, LSE. In the session, Dr. Sin Yee Koh (Monash University) presented a paper titled “Malaysia, Moving the Mountain and Greening the Sea for Whom? ‘Forest City’ and the Transplantation of Green Urbanism in Iskandar Malaysia”, co-authored by Professor Hyun Bang Shin and Assistant Professor Yimin Zhao (Renmin University), also a former PhD student of UPD.

Dr. Jayaraj Sundaresan, LSE Fellow in Human Geography, Department of Geography and Environment LSE, presented a paper titled “Mistrust, Anger and Fear: Socio-emotional spaces of participatory planning in Bangalore: Towards an understanding of Coproduction and Citizen state with Dr. Benjamin John (Research Associate, National Institute of Urban Affairs) in the session “Boundaries, Contestations and Citizen-State/Capital interface”.

Dr. Julia Corwin, Assistant Professor, who joined the Environment Cluster of the Department of Geography and Environment LSE in 2018, presented a paper titled ““If the road is closed, then you go through the backalley”: Informal networks in Delhi’s electronics markets.” in the session Network, Circulation and Everyday Urban Economies.

In the next day on 21 Sep, Dr. Mara Nogueira, LSE Fellow in Human Geography, Department of Geography and Environment LSE presented “Work, housing and the right to the city in BeloHorizonte/Brazil” in the session “Negotiating urban space beyond “in-formality”.
