Professor Hyun Bang Shin is Professor of Geography and Urban Studies, and Director of the Saw Swee Hock Southeast Asia Centre at LSE.

Professor Shin gave a keynote speech to the symposium ‘Neighbourhood Transformation in East Asian Cities: Is ‘Gentrification’ the Right Frame of Reference?’, hosted by the International Institute for Asian Studies. Entitled ‘Frontiers of Gentrification, Perspectives from Asia’, the keynote discusses the importance of understanding gentrification from an Asian context, and as an endogenous process which works in tandem with other urban mechanisms. It also focuses on the different perspectives of gentrification, and their production of complicated scales and temporalities of displacement.
