Professor of Geography and Urban Studies Hyun Bang Shin is chairing a two-day workshop summarising LSE’s Saw Swee Hock Southeast Asia Centre (SEAC)’s ongoing British Academy funded project on ‘The Urban Spectacle of Global China’, of which Shin is leading as principal investigator.

Taking place from Tuesday 25 January (13:00) to Wednesday 26 January 2022 (16:00), the workshop is an opportunity to hear about the project team’s key findings, alongside contributions from project collaborators and discussions by renowned scholars in the field, including LSE G&E PhD alumni Dr Koh Sin Yee and Assistant Professor Yimin Zhao.

The British Academy project uses methods of comparative urbanism and multi-sited case studies to uncover the differentiated models of urban production in the era of Global China. It critically examines the dynamics of urban political economy and contemporary urban living in a rapidly shifting geopolitical context. The research has been carried out in London, Iskandar Malaysia, Beijing and Shunde (Guangdong Province) between January 2019 and January 2022.
